Judge sentences mother to 16 years in prison for not preventing girl’s death from diabetic complications

A woman whose neglect of her daughter ultimately contributed to the girl’s death from complications of diabetes was sentenced to 16 years in prison Monday.

Georgia Jones, 31, pleaded guilty and asked Judge Gary Stephens to sentence her.

State District Judge Bob Brotherton appointed Ron Poole Thursday as the special prosecutor in Dallas County DA Craig Watkins’ contempt of court hearing.

Poole is the First Assistant District Attorney in Cooke County.

Brotherton, who was appointed to preside over the hearing, has said he will set a date for Watkins’ contempt of court hearing after the attorneys have a chance to confer.

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins Wednesday sought a dismissal of the contempt of court charge filed against him for refusing to testify at a hearing where he was accused of prosecutorial misconduct.

Watkins’ attorneys filed a motion Wednesday afternoon in state court arguing that the contempt charge should not stand because the hearing where Watkins was held in contempt earlier this month should have never been held.

State District Judge Larry Mitchell ordered Monday a change in the execution date for a woman sentenced to death for killing her elderly neighbor, Dorothy Booth, during a robbery in Lancaster.

The order moved the execution of Kimberly McCarthy from this week to June 26.

McCarthy has been tried twice for the murder of her 71-year-old neighbor Dorothy Booth.

UPDATE: Security requested for Dallas County criminal court judge after family photos stolen from bench

UPDATE at 5 p.m.: Security has been requested by the judge. The Dallas County  Sheriff’s Office was handling security for the McLelland funeral and that delayed information about the theft of the photos getting to the proper people.

A spokeswoman said the sheriff’s department is talking with the county’s judges about how to handle security. No decision has been made as of just before 5 p.m.

The search for a replacement for Mike McLelland has expanded beyond interim District Attorney Brandi Fernandez.

McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found shot to death in their Forney home over Easter weekend. Authorities are searching for the killers and trying to determine if there is a link to the murder of McLelland prosecutor Mark Hasse, who was shot and killed Jan. 31 as he walked to the courthouse.
